Lyde Green Community School

Our approach to Teaching & Learning and PD

We believe that great teaching is the most powerful lever for student success. Our approach is grounded in evidence, shaped by practice, and driven by a commitment to continuous improvement.

We are building a culture where teaching is seen as a craft – one that is honed through deliberate practice, thoughtful reflection, and group rehearsal.

Teaching That Works

Our classroom practice is informed by Teach Like a Champion 3.0 by Doug Lemov, which provides a clear, practical framework for high-impact teaching. We believe in the power of strong routines, high expectations, and precise, intentional instruction. Techniques such as Cold Call, Turn and Talk, and Show Me are not just strategies — they are tools for equity, engagement, and excellence.

Literacy is the foundation of learning and opportunity

Drawing on Reading Reconsidered and Chris Such’s The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading, we will embed reading across the curriculum, ensuring every student becomes a fluent, thoughtful reader.

Equally, we are committed to developing oracy as a core skill. Using the Voice 21 framework, we will dedicate curriculum time to structured talk, debate, and public speaking.

Professional Development That Makes a Difference

Every member of staff deserves the opportunity to grow, reflect, and refine their practice. Professional development is not a one-off event – it’s a culture of continuous improvement, built into the rhythm of school life.

We will create time and space for staff to engage in deliberate practice, collaborative planning, and subject-specific inquiry. Coaching will be a central part of our development model – focused, supportive, and rooted in classroom practice.

We will use Steplab to support instructional coaching, enabling regular, bite-sized feedback that helps teachers make small, meaningful changes over time.
