Our Uniform
Lyde Green Community School firmly believes that a uniform fosters a feeling of belonging and encourages children to take pride in their school. It is important that uniform is worn smartly, as this prepares learners for the expectations of the wider world. Because of this, the uniform code will be enforced.
Learners represent themselves, their families and Lyde Green Community School every time they step outside their door in their school uniform. At all times they are in school uniform or representing Lyde Green Community School, they must conduct themselves as they would in school. We take this very seriously and will punish learners for representing themselves or the school in a negative light, irrespective of whether learners are on school premises or not.
Learner presentation
On the way to and from school learners should:
- Wear their school uniform perfectly
- Speak at an appropriate volume level and with appropriate language
- Walk in groups of a maximum of six learners (this will help to keep the volume at an appropriate level)
- Ensure they travel directly to and from school and that an adult knows their whereabouts. Learners should not congregate or loiter.
- Not act in any way which will put themselves or anyone else in danger (e.g. no running in the street, speaking inappropriately to learners of other schools)
- Not stand on the pavement waiting for friends
- Not eat junk food/sweets or have fizzy drinks – if found with these they will be confiscated.
The school will expect parental support in disciplining pupils who do not behave appropriately outside of school, at any time, particularly if they are in school uniform.

Hair, Make Up and Jewellery
Hair
We welcome students to express their cultural and racial identities through their hair. The school protects students’ right to wear culturally significant and protective hairstyles (including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, and braids).
If hair is dyed, it must be a natural human hair colour (e.g., blonde, brown, black, auburn), regardless of the student’s original hair colour.
Jewellery
Students may wear a standard wristwatch and one pair of small stud earrings.
For health and safety reasons, facial piercings and other visible jewellery are not permitted. However, the school recognises and respects jewellery or piercings worn as a sincere religious or cultural practice. We ask parents/carers to notify the school of these so we can jointly agree on safe ways to wear them during practical lessons.
While standard smartwatches and fitness trackers are not allowed to prevent distractions, exceptions are readily made as a reasonable adjustment for students who require them for medical monitoring (e.g., diabetes).
Makeup
Students in Years 7 & 8 are not permitted to wear makeup. Students in Years 9 to 11 may wear discreet makeup (e.g., light foundation or mascara).
To ensure safety and participation in practical subjects, nail varnish, acrylic/false nails, and false eyelashes/extensions are not permitted for any student.
Religious Head Coverings
The school respects the right of students to wear head coverings for religious reasons (such as hijabs, turbans, or kippahs).
Head coverings should be plain (without patterns or sequins) and in keeping with the school colours: navy, bottle green, grey, or black.
